Digital Team Building & Productivity Training

Times are changing. Employees need to work together more than ever to keep companies competitive. The corona crisis has just revealed how much employees depend on good team work and knowledge of company processes. The best way to achieve this is through team building.

The German System of Dual Vocational Training (VET) is renown in the world for two reasons: high productivity of trained staff and effective onboarding for new team members. Under the dual system, new staff does rotations in different departments of the company, allowing them to gather experience, insights and understanding of important processes. This training immensely reduces inefficiencies because employees know what is going on behind the otherwise “iron curtain” between departments.

 The steps to take:

 1. Analyze links between departments
 

Your first step is analyzing your departments and its links between each other. Where do you see frequent connections and a strong exchange of information? This is not the same as communication – in fact good communication might be missing despite a strong connection.

 2. Map your knowledge

Find out what staff knows about other departments and their tasks. E.g. staff in marketing might not know how sales people have a hard time implementing their advertising strategy and sales itself might not know what accounting does with their (badly documented) client data.

3. Create your learning master plan

This is your master plan. Once knowledge gaps are identified, define the format and content to train your staff members. Be strategic! What does really benefit them and will help you to boost your productivity?

4. Mobilize existing training resources
 

Take a good look at the resources you already have! A lot of times, there is no need to develop training material from scratch. You might take a module from onboarding, combine it with department specific training content and mount the new package on your already established learning platform.

5. Design team building package

Now is the time to do the fine-tuning: adapt existing training content and create what is still missing. Ask your staff to actively participate in the process, e.g. by filming a video of their most important routine. In the end it is their work and tasks that must be visualized in the training module.

6. Deploy content

When you are moving towards implementation, you might be anxious to finally see the results. Be patient though, it proved efficient to allow your learners some time to go at their own pace when getting to know other departments processes. 

7. Evaluate impact

Now you can see the fruit you’ve been sowing. Modern reporting systems allow you to track your learners success, making the effect on productivity visible.
